SANTIAGO and Medellín Metro orders extra CAF cars

SANTIAGO Metro ordered four additional five-car metro trains for deployment on lines 3 and 6 which are currently under construction in the Chilean capital. CAF announced on December 21 that it had won follow-on orders to supply additional metro cars to existing customers in Chile and Colombia.

This is an add-on to a €160m order signed in late 2013 which covered the supply of 37 five-car trainsets for lines 3 and 6 along with 20 years of maintenance. So far CAF has delivered 20 of the trainsets.

The 15.3km 10-station Line 6 will connect Los Leones station on Line 1 with Cerrilos in the west, and is scheduled to open next year. Line 3 will run for 21.7km from the northern district of Huechuraba to the city centre, where it will follow Avienda Mattam passing beneath Irarrazával, before terminating at Larraín. The 18-station line is due to open in June 2018.

Meanwhile, the Medellín metro has ordered two extra trainsets as follow-on to a €89m July 2015 contract for 20 three-car units which are currently being built.

MUMBAI Metro Rail (MMR), India, plans to purchase driverless trains to operate on Mumbai metro Line 3, which will run for 33.5km from Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (Seepz) in the north of the city to Cuffe Parade in the southern district of Colaba. The metro rail agency has plans to open the Metro system for passengers in phases from 2020. Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation's director (systems), AA Bhatt, said that the driverless train will be equipped with latest technology prevalent across the world. "It will have driverless features besides communication-based train control system." Moscow - Berlin Talgo train service launched by Russian Railways

In an inauguration ceremony at Moscow Kursk station on December 17, Russian Railways launched train service between Moscow and Berlin. Train coaches will be provided by Spain based Talgo Train Company. This service will solved the gauge problem between Europe and Russia since coaches have variable gauge which can do transition in 20 minutes. Journey time between Moscow and Berlin will be cut by 4 h 45 min to 20 h 14 min, while the eastbound timing of 20 h 35 min will be 5 h 21 min faster than the current service. Train will run at a maximum   speed of 200kmph.  Russian Railways has will run its Talgo trains as Strizh. Russia has launched this service keeping in mind 2018 FIFA world cup. Inauguration ceremony was attended by Transport Minister of Russia Mr Maxim Sokolov, Russian Railways President Mr Oleg Belozerov and Talgo president Mr Carlos Oriol.
