Pune Metro approved by Indian Government
Pune Metro got a go ahead by Indian Central Government and Maharashtra State Government. For seamless implementation and execution, Pune Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the project, will be formed.
The first phase involves building a 16.6km north-south line connecting the densely-populated Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area with Swargate. This will include an 11.6km elevated section and a 5km tunnel. Stage 2 will be a 14.7km east-west line from Vanaz to Ramvadi, which will be fully elevated.
Pune and Nagpur (Other city on the Indian state of Maharashtra) metro projects will be a part of the umbrella institution called Maharashtra Metro
Pune’s population has surged in recent years from 3.57 million in 2001 to 4.99 million in 2011, and is forecast to continue growing to 6.9 million in 2021 and 7.73 million in 2031.
Maha metro MD said, "Pune metro will cover a stretch of 31 km. Total cost of the project is Rs 11,400 crore and 60 per cent of that would be funded by the external agencies, including the World Bank and European banks. The project will be completed in five years, by 2021. Right from survey to execution, we will ensure that deadline for the project is not flouted." He also added, "The USP of the project will be state-of-the art carriages and stations, that will compete with the best metro stations across the world," assures Dixit and adds, "We will create beautiful landscapes at most of the vital points through which metro will traverse. People of Pune will especially fall in love with the stretch where metro goes along and across the Mula and Mutha rivers. There will be landscapes and colourful public gardens recreated along the metro path for people to unwind during their leisure hours."
